As Aristides de Sousa Mendes, many other people, were guided by his/her own conscience in the troubled times of World War Two. Here is an example:
Irena Sendler was
born in Poland on February 15, 1910.Of he childhood little is known. Just that she was greatly influenced by his father, an humble doctor. During the time of the Holocaust, Irena was not idly: she had to do something! Every day, Irena was carrying a large suitcase and was accompanied by a dog. And every day, Irena entered and left the camp, past the guards. Upon returning from her walk when passing the guards, the dog was barking furiously, as he saw the danger in them. Within this huge suitcase, traveled always a child, who after the war ended, would be given to his/her parents. With this gesture, Irena Sendler saved 2,500 children from death in the nazi's concentration camps. She married and had a daughter. On May 15, 2008, she died in a hospital in Warsaw.
